The Whitsunday Islands are in the state of Queensland in Australia (I live in Sydney which is in the state of New South Whales). For the first 4 days of my mid semester break myself and a few friends went and stayed on Airlie Beach, which is on the mainland looking out onto the 76 different Islands that are called the Whitsundays. A comparison could be the U.S. Caribbean if it is hard to think about what they look like. The water is crystal blue and the beaches are pure white. Here are some pictures of the journey to paradise.
At the Brisbane Airport for the 3 hour layover (me and my friend Emily). We got stuffed animals as souvenirs :)
When flying to the Whitsunday Islands the planes land on the shortest runway in the southern hemisphere, on Hamilton Island. Then Emily, Connor, and I (my travel buddies) took a ferry to Airlie Beach.
The view from the runway on Hamilton Island :)
After getting off the ferry this was the view from the docks. It was a perfect sunny day outside!
By the hostel my friends and I stayed at there was a beach and grassy areas to lay down on and sun bathe. This was the view from those areas
Right next to the grassy areas there was a manmade lagoon so people could go swimming. It was refreshing and fun.
Here is everyone I travelled with to Airlie Beach. Bethany, Emily, Connor, Courtney, Mary, and myself. :)
Beach next to the lagoon
There was a "sailing club" near the lagoon along a walk and here are all of the sailboats that are used.
Night swim in the Lagoon! My three closest friends that I have made while in Australia - Courtney, Mary, and Beth.
The second day on Airlie we went on a boat with tour guides and went snorkeling on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. It had rained the previous week so it was a tad murky but still really cool to see the fish and coral.
After snorkelling the boat took us to the National Park where Whitehaven Beach is and beautiful views of the islands!
The sand is so white that it reflects the sun and does not get hot. It is like being in the water and having the sun reflect on you and making you get colour 10X faster than if you were on a regular beach. Wear that sunscreen!! :)
"Turtle Island"
Whitehaven Beach
Whitehaven Beach - The sand was so much more white than this picture shows. It was gorgeous! Because of what the sand is made up of it exfoliates your skin excessively and make hair very soft. My friends and I all tried and looked a little like fools rubbing sand all through our hair and over our bodies. It helped my hair become softer but irritated my skin a little, but helped Courtney's skin a lot.
"King King Island" - Can you see the face of king kong??
On the third day Bethany, Mary, Emily, and myself all went on a jet-ski tour passed islands, all the way from Airlie Beach to Daydream Island. It took about an hour to an hour and a half to get from one to the other.
bethany drove on the way there :)
This wallaby was hanging out on the grass eating an apple :) They are so cute!
Fed stingrays.....
Kissed a Bamboo Shark!....
And held a "rhino" starfish
I drove on the way back to Airlie :)
Here we all are on our last day heading back to Hamilton Island on the ferry. :)
